Key info & contacts

  • Airport: Barcelona El Prat Airport is about 17 Km from the city center. Most international flights fly in and out of terminal 1 and most low-cost airlines fly out of terminal 2. There is a free airport bus (green color) that can take you between the terminals. Taxi from the airport to the city center is about 25 to 30 euro depending on time of day (including the airport surcharge). You can also take the train to the city center (Sants, Pg Gracia) from terminal 1. There is a new Metro line L9 that stops at both terminal 1 & 2, but you will probably have to make a transfer to get to the new line.  Or, the airport bus runs directly to Plaza Catalonia (very easy and frequent).
  • Taxi: It's very easy to find taxis in Barcelona (green light on top of the taxi indicates available). They are plentiful, metered and fairly priced compared to other European cities. You can flag them down in the street or find a nearby taxi stand.
  • Metro (transport ): The Barcelona Metro is modern, convenient and good value. Buy a T10 card if you plan to use it regularly (10 trips for about 11 euro). http://www.metrobarcelona.es/en/maps.html
  • Train: If you are traveling to other destinations in Spain, check out the train schedule and prices vs. flying. The fast train (AVE) to Madrid is less than 3 hours. http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/index.html
  • Touristic Buses: There are 3 routes for touristic buses (red, blue and green). You can hop on and off the bus at each of the stops (44 in total). Plaza Catalonia is the hub for the buses. A 1 day ticket is about 25 euro.  https://www.barcelonabusturistic.cat/en/home
  • Camp Nou: Football is a religion in Barcelona. You can visit Camp Nou and take a tour of the stadium, museum and buy lots of overpriced kit in the gift shop. https://www.fcbarcelona.com
  • Safety: Barcelona is a very safe city, but just be aware of your valuables. Many tourists get pick pocketed on Las Ramblas or in the metro. Don't leave your phone or wallet on a cafe table. Just be aware.
  • Day Trips: The Salvador Dalí Museum is located in Figueres which is about a one hour train ride north of Barcelona. The famous Montserrat monastery can be reached by train from Plaza Espanya.
  • Wine Tours: Catalonya is home to some of the finest wine and cava in Europe. Penedès and Priorat are two great options for doing a wine tour. Contact Sophie at Niso Wine Tours for more info. http://nisowinetours.com
  • Guided Tours: If you are interested in a personalized Barcelona city tour, please contact Nelson for more information. nelsondarocas@gmail.com
  • Gay Circuit Week:  Matinee's Gay Circuit week in August (now almost 2 weeks) is only for the strong willed. A-list circuit boys from all over the world descend on Barcelona for this festival. The pool party is the most popular - normally on a Tuesday. You can purchase tickets for individual parties or a pass for all of them. Considering it's Spain .. the parties are surprisingly well organized. http://www.circuitfestival.net/2016/intro

about me: Robert Bowles

Originally from Detroit, Michigan, I've been living, working and traveling outside of the U.S. for the past 21 years. In 2000, I took a sabbatical year in Barcelona and fell in love with this city. In 2005, I decided I needed a permanent "home base" in Europe and purchased an apartment here ... best decision ever. Although I have never worked in Spain, I call it home and try to spend as much time here as possible between my contracts. Sitges is my other home ... and I spend a lot of weekends there with a great group of friends.
